High-end phone to be waterproof, get LTE, NFC
A new smartphone from NEC Casio is due to launch in Japan at provider NTT DoCoMo. The high-end Medias LTE N-04D will support 4G LTE speeds and sport a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. As is typical of high-end Japanese phones, a 1Seg TV tuner will also be onboard.
The 4.3-inch touchscreen has a high 720p resolution, and Bluetooth 4.0 is onboard. NFC for mobile payments is likewise present on top of the usual Wi-Fi. The body is just 11.6mm thick, and in keeping with many Japanese phones, is waterproof.
Other than a ship date of February 15 at NTT, no other info such as pricing is yet known. [via Impress]
Another NEC phone with a weird name is headed our way, folks. NTT DoCoMo is gearing up to launch the NEC Medias LTE N-04D. As its name implies, it’ll be a 4G LTE device aimed toward the high-end market. It has a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, a 4.3 inch 720p HD display and a TV tuner for tube on the go. It’ll also have Bluetooth 4.0 which is needed to interface with Casio”s G-SHOCK Bluetooth watch. I really, really love NEC’s phones but unfortunately I’ll never have the chance to own one unless I make a move to Japan. Japanese electronics maker Fujitsu is planning to enter Europe’s smartphone and tablet markets this year with the release of a number Android and Windows Phone 7-based devices, according to a report from the Financial Times.
Fujitsu has confirmed that it is already in talks with operators about partnering to release the device as it targets “double digit” market share on the continent over the next three to five years. However, it is not confirmed if the “wide” range of device will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress event this month.
The company is not new to the mobile telecom industry as it has been producing and selling devices in its native Japan for some time, but its plan for Europe is an attempt to claim a stake a claim in one of the fast growing mobile industries and boost growth overseas.
Europe is yet to see smartphone ownership rates hit that of America and, in spite of economic issues across the European Union, the smartphone industry is set for strong growth. As a report from Vision Mobile finds that the continent has a smartphone penetration rate of 51 percent — 12 percent behind the US — however that figure varies and is lower in a number of markets in the region.
Fujitsu’s European expansion plans comes months after fellow Japanese manufacturer Panasonic revealed plans to step into the continent having previously been active there. The firms are looking to follow in the footsteps of Samsung, which saw record sales last year, Sony, which now wholly owns its mobile firm, and HTC, though the latter has struggled of late, its brand is recognised internationally.
The moves can be explained by the limitations of Japan’s domestic market, which is only just adjusting to smartphones despite pioneering technology and the mobile Web, which are forcing its device markers to broaden their horizons. That’s according to Japan-based tech watcher Dr. Serkan Toto, who told The Next Web:
All of Japan’s remaining handset makers announced plans to internationalize, after years of doing good business in their home market. Japan’s population is greying and ageing, the smartphone boom paved the way for makers from the US, China, Korea and Taiwan to enter the once closed Japanese market, and all domestic makers took too long to switch to smartphones.
Toto – who is an industry consultant and contributor to Japan’s Asiajin, among other tech sites — further explains why Fujitsu, and Panasonic, will likely struggle in Europe:
Fujitsu will have a hard time, as it lacks the economies of scale that its competitors, such as Samsung have. Japanese device makers ship over 30 million handsets per year, of which 10 percent accounts for Samsung alone.
Fujitsu makes solid phones, but I don’t see any models that offer unique selling points, neither from a technical nor from a design point of view. They are clearly behind the competition.
The devices will borrow a number of features from Japan’s market, including mobile payment system NFC and LTE mobile broadband technology. The Financial Times report also states that the device will include fingerprint access to the device, to help secure the payment system and data on board.
Fujitsu has been strongly rumoured to move into Europe, and it remains to be seen if its devices will be a hit or indeed what demographic they will target. Asian device markers like ZTE and Huawei have seen success with lower cost devices, but Japanese firms have tended to aim for mid- to high-tier phone instead.

This slide was reportedly displayed at a press conference yesterday, but perhaps it gives away a little bit more than Fujitsu — or at least Microsoft — would have intended. The box on the far right appears to show a tablet with a Metro-style UI and it clearly says “Win8 Launch” and “Q4 2012,” even though there is still no official launch schedule for the operating system. Of course, the slide might specifically be referring to the introduction of a Fujitsu tablet running Windows 8, in which case the OS itself may be planned to launch earlier — and indeed previous leaks and rumors have suggested the new Windows will be a summertime baby.
In other news, the slide also notably shows two Ultrabooks planned for May, perhaps taking the little and large approach we’ve seen from Samsung, as well as a hybrid slate and possible Transformer Prime rival, due in September. Will it be enough to reverse the manufacturer’s fortunes?
I’ve had an Acer Liquid E since it was launched and I wouldn’t trade it in for anything, except maybe this phone. People have to remember where the Liquid E came from, of course it doesn’t have the same battery life as the Nexus. Are you i****s? The Galaxy Nexus was just launched! Compare it to the android phones of the day and it was pretty much on par with everyone else. The only downfall was the lack of support from the modding community (until LiquidNext came around). My phone has been through the war and still works great. Sure, I only get a day out of my battery, but who doesn’t charge their phone at night anyway? I still get a day out of my battery, a year and a half later!!!
I’m excited for this phone, can’t wait to get my hands on it! I’ll still keep my Liquid E in my back pocket though.

Siemens this morning announced that it will acquire all of the stock of eMeter in an effort to enhance its smart grid offering. The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, is expected to be completed by the end of the year. eMeter will be part of the Smart Grid Division of the Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector, which is housed within Siemens.
All eMeter employees will be transitioned to Siemens (US) as a result of the transaction.
eMeter will become a global business segment and center of competence for Meter Data Management (MDM), and will continue to operate from its San Mateo, California headquarters.
eMeter delivers platform and MDM application software for the smart grid market, enabling electric, gas and water utilities to reduce operational costs and drive energy efficiency.

Toshiba’s 4K 3D TV to cost about $11,600 in Japan
Toshiba’s ultra-advanced ZL2 HDTV will be rebadged as the 55X3 when it goes on sale in Japan on December 10. The 55-inch HDTV has a native 4K resolution (3,840×2,160) but can still display glasses-free 3D content.
The glasses-free 3D effect is accomplished by tracking viewers’ faces with a camera for the optimal effect. Each user then only gets treated to 720p resolution, however. Conversion from 2D to 3D is also supported, and HD recording to a USB-attached hard drive is possible. Three tuners are built in.

When the first Toshiba Android tablet was released, it seemed like a really big deal – at one point it was even rumored that they’d be the ones to host the tablet-centric Android 3.0 Honeycomb as a hero – alas that did not happen, and now that the first iteration (call the Toshiba Thrive, just so you know) is both too fat and unwieldily to sell as a top dog, the big T is sending out a new generation called Toshiba Excite. This tablet was revealed a few weeks ago as a contender for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with its dual-core 1.2Ghz Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor and its 10.1-inch display at 1280 x 800 resolution – and today Mobile Syrup relays Toshiba information that it’ll be on sale come February 2012.
By that time we expect Toshiba to once again be in the same boat – with a tablet that on its own is certainly worth the cash that a person dropped on it, but compared to the rest of the current Android tablet lineup just does not compete. Even though this tablet will still be 7.7mm thin, will have a 5 megapixel camera on the back, a 2 megapixel camera on the front, and will of course have a 16GB and a 32GB option, will certainly be shut out by such masterpieces as the Asus Transformer Prime. A brighter screen, twice as powerful a processor, and two color choices to boot? I think so, yes.
That said, the OMAP4 is certainly nothing to scoff at, and this unit does look quite enticing to the eye with its stark aluminum silvery back and its microSD card slot, not to mention its miniHDMI-out port. Like the original Toshiba Android tablet, we’ll certainly have a few options for connections. With a market of consumers looking to get the tablet that suits them perfectly, it’ll be the people who trust the name TOSHIBA that pick this bad boy up — other than that, those who love things that are SHINY.
